How to Fix and Restore a PS3 Controller
Share
The PlayStation 3 controller is one of the most durable and repairable controllers from its generation. Even after years of heavy use, many common problems can be fixed with a good internal cleaning and a few simple repairs.
At RetroGamer.ae, we service every PS3 controller that comes through our workshop, bringing worn and problematic controllers back to reliable working condition.
Common PS3 Controller Problems
One of the most common faults we see is buttons registering or pressing themselves automatically. This can cause characters to move on their own, menus to scroll unexpectedly, or buttons to activate without being touched. Another common issue is stubborn buttons.
Fortunately, both of these issues are usually straightforward to fix.
What You Need

For this type of PS3 controller repair, you'll need:
-
99% Isopropyl alcohol
-
Masking tape
-
Cotton buds / Q-tips
-
Toothbrush
-
Phillips screwdriver
-
Replacement joystick thumb caps, if required
The Ribbon Cable Problem

Inside the PS3 controller is a flexible ribbon cable that connects the button contacts to the main board. The ribbon cable is held in place by a black rubber pressure pad. Over time, the cable can lose the correct pressure against its contacts, resulting in unreliable button inputs or buttons that appear to press themselves.

A simple and effective solution is to reinforce the ribbon cable. It is also highly recommended to clean the cable with cotton buds and 99% Iso to improve contact with the main board.
Here we use five small pieces of masking tape, each carefully cut to the shape of the black rubber pressure pad that sits over the ribbon cable. These pieces add a small amount of extra pressure, helping the ribbon cable maintain solid contact with the board.
You'll need to tape them over the flat part of the pad.

Once installed correctly, this can eliminate the dreaded auto-pressing button problem and restore normal button operation.

A Full Internal Cleaning
Repairing the fault is only part of the process. After years of use, PS3 controllers can accumulate a surprising amount of dirt, dust, skin oils and grime inside.
Before cleaning:

We completely disassemble and clean the controller, including the:
-
Main shell
-
Buttons
-
D-pad
-
Trigger buttons
-
Internal conductive contacts and rubber pads
-
Analog sticks
-
Ribbon cable area
-
Motherboard and internal components
We use 99% isopropyl alcohol together with cotton buds and a toothbrush to carefully remove dirt and residue without leaving moisture behind.
The outside of the controller is also thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before reassembly.

Replacing Worn Thumb Sticks
Another very common problem with older PS3 controllers is the condition of the analog stick thumb caps.
Thumb caps before:

After years of use, the original rubber can become worn, smooth, cracked or sticky, especially in UAE's summer humidity. Rather than leaving a controller with uncomfortable or degraded thumb sticks that could ruin a gaming session, we replace them with fresh caps where necessary.
This makes a HUGE big difference to how the controller feels in your hands.

The Result
A PlayStation 3 controller doesn't necessarily need to be replaced just because it has developed button problems or has become dirty and worn.
With proper cleaning, ribbon cable reinforcement and replacement of worn components, these controllers can often be brought back to excellent working condition.
That's why we love servicing PS3 controllers at RetroGamer.ae they're incredibly durable, straightforward to work on, and well worth restoring rather than throwing away. Every PS3 Console we sell will come with a fully serviced controller
