How RetroGamer.ae Inspects and Services Every Retro Console Before It Reaches You
Buying retro consoles today isn't quite the same as buying one when it was new.
A console that has spent +20 years sitting in someone's collection has accumulated age, dust, heat cycles and component wear. A console can look fantastic on the outside and still have failing capacitors, a weak laser, cracked solder joints, yellowed plastic or a worn-out display.
At RetroGamer.ae, we don't just power on a console and call it good to go. Our process and standards are much deeper and higher than that.
Every console we sell goes through an extensive inspection and service process before it reaches a customer. The exact work depends on the console, its age and its known failure points.
We Test More Than "Does It Turn On?"
Our inspection starts with the basics: power, video output, controllers, buttons, ports, disc drives, cartridge slots and memory functions.
We also perform a thorough visual inspection and look for physical damage, broken or yellowed plastic etc.
Our retro gaming specialists also look for problems that may not be immediately obvious.
Different consoles have different weaknesses, and years of working with retro gaming hardware has taught us what to look for.
Capacitors: A Common Problem in Older Hardware

Electrolytic capacitors don't last forever. After decades, they can dry out, leak or lose their electrical characteristics.
Some consoles are particularly well known for capacitor-related problems.
Nintendo GameCube: The disc drive and laser assembly can develop problems with age, and the capacitors around the optical drive are a common area of concern. A GameCube may power on perfectly while struggling or refusing to read game discs.
Sega Game Gear: Game Gear consoles are notorious for failed electrolytic capacitors. Bad capacitors can cause extremely dim or distorted video, audio problems, complete failure of certain functions, no power... The list is long.
Every Game Gear needs new capacitors. It's non negotiable. Sega used low cost, low life capacitors in them and today you wont find one working if they have not already been replaced.
Restoring Yellowed Plastic

One of the most obvious signs of age on retro consoles is yellowing.
This is something we simply cannot accept, and we absolutely refuse to ship anything that is yellowed.
Retro console yellowing is mainly caused by brominated flame retardants in ABS plastic reacting with oxygen and UV exposure.
This is particularly noticeable on systems such as the Sega Dreamcast and the white PlayStation 2, but it can affect almost any retro console or accessory.
Where appropriate, we treat yellowed plastic and restore it as part of our standard servicing process, and if the condition is way beyond help, we will replace parts entirely.
The goal is to bring the original parts back to a clean, presentable condition while retaining their original character.
Optical Drives and Laser Adjustment
Disc-based consoles have another major failure point: the optical drive.
A laser can become weak over time, and mechanical parts can wear or become contaminated with dust.
On consoles such as the Original Xbox and Sega Saturn, we inspect disc reading performance carefully.
Where appropriate, the laser can be cleaned and adjusted to restore reliable disc reading. We don't simply increase the laser power blindly; adjustments are performed with special tools to bring back the lasers up to spec as per the manufacturers requirements.
A console that reads one disc doesn't necessarily have a healthy optical drive. We test multiple games whenever possible to make sure the drive is performing consistently.
Solder Reflow and Cracked Connections
Retro consoles have endured decades of heating and cooling. Over time, solder joints can develop cracks or poor connections.
This can cause intermittent faults that are incredibly difficult to diagnose.
Systems such as the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis can develop problems around connectors, cartridge slots and other soldered connections.
For any consoles that have the potential to develop this issue, we perform solder reflow and repair as part of our preventative maintenance processes.
This is particularly important when dealing with any console where something is constantly connected/disconnected, such as cartridges, power cords or controllers.
LCD Screen Replacement

Portable consoles have their own set of problems.
The original LCD screens in systems such as the Sony PSP and Nintendo Game Boy can suffer from dead pixels, poor contrast, damaged polarizers, scratches, discoloration or simply poor performance compared with modern replacement panels.
When a screen is beyond reasonable restoration, we replace it with a suitable replacement display.
For some handhelds, this also gives us an opportunity to perform other preventative maintenance while the system is already disassembled.
Replacing Worn Joysticks and Controls

Controls are one of the most heavily used parts of any console.
A system can look immaculate but have a joystick that is completely worn out.
The PlayStation Vita, for example, is known for analogue stick wear. Drift, inconsistent movement and damaged thumbsticks are all things we check for. PS3 controllers often develop several issues that can be prevented with some maintenance.
We also inspect buttons, D-pads, triggers and shoulder buttons across the consoles we service. Worn controls are cleaned or replaced depending on their condition.
Cartridge Slots and Connectors
Cartridge-based consoles often develop problems simply because their connectors have spent decades being used.
Dust, oxidation and worn contacts can result in:

Missing colors or graphics

Consoles requiring cartridges to be repositioned

Save functions becoming unreliable
We clean and inspect cartridge connectors and test them with multiple cartridges where possible.
This is particularly important with systems such as the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Mega Drive and Game Boy family.
Cleaning Goes Much Deeper Than the Outside
A retro console that looks clean on a shelf can be surprisingly dirty inside.
Dust accumulates around heatsinks, fans, optical drives, power supplies and circuit boards. Decades of dust and grime can also accumulate around buttons and controllers.
We disassemble consoles as required and clean them internally and externally.
Controllers receive the same attention. Buttons, membranes, analogue mechanisms, shells and contact surfaces are inspected and cleaned.
After all, there's little point selling a beautifully restored console with a controller full of 25 years of grime.
Power Supplies Are Inspected Too
The power supply is one of the most important part of any console, yet it is often overlooked.
We inspect power supplies for obvious damage, overheating, corrosion and other signs of age.
For consoles with internal power supplies, we inspect the relevant components and connections during servicing.
Where a power supply is unsafe or unreliable, it isn't something we are willing to ignore just because the console happens to turn on.
Save Batteries and Memory
Some older consoles use batteries to maintain saved games, system settings or real-time clock information.
After decades, these batteries can eventually die or, in some cases, leak.
We check battery-backed systems and replace batteries where required.
This is particularly relevant to systems such as the Nintendo Game Boy, SNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and various other cartridge-based consoles.
Testing After Servicing
Servicing a console is only half the job.
After repairs and restoration work, we test the console again.
We check things such as:
Video: Is the picture stable and free from obvious faults?
Audio: Are both channels working correctly and is there unwanted noise?
Controls: Do every button, D-pad, trigger and analogue control respond correctly?
Disc drives: Can the console reliably read games?
Cartridge slots: Do games boot consistently?
Ports: Are controller, AV and other connectors functioning correctly?
Thermals: Does the console operate normally after extended use?
Cosmetics: Is the console clean and properly reassembled?
A console isn't finished simply because the original fault has been repaired. It needs to survive the testing process afterward.
Some Consoles Need More Work Than Others
There isn't a single "retro console service" that applies to everything.
A Sega Game Gear may need capacitor replacement.
A PlayStation 1 may need optical drive attention.
A Dreamcast may need extensive cleaning and shell restoration.
A PSP may require a new LCD.
A PS Vita may need new analogue sticks.
A Mega Drive may need solder work around its connectors.
A white PlayStation 2 may need significant cosmetic restoration.
And an otherwise perfectly functioning console may simply need a thorough internal cleaning and inspection.
We assess each console individually rather than applying the same checklist to every system.
Why This Matters When Buying Used Retro Hardware
Retro consoles are old.
That's part of their appeal, but it's also something buyers need to understand.
A console manufactured in 1998 is now almost 30 years old. Even if it has spent most of its life sitting in a cupboard, its electronic and mechanical components have still aged.
That's why two consoles that look identical can behave completely differently.
One might be ready to play for years. Another might have a failing laser, leaking capacitor or cracked solder joint waiting to cause a problem.
